Abstract

Indonesia has power plants with more than 50% of the total existing generation using coal fuel. Burning coal in the power generation industry will produce 5.68% of the total ash consisting of 75% fly ash and 25% bottom ash. The high yield of bottom ash waste from the coal combustion process increases the amount of solid waste. Bottom ash can be used as a raw material for making zeolites. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of bottom ash as a synthetic zeolite. Zeolite will be used as a catalyst in biodiesel synthesis. The morphology of bottom ash that will be used as a raw material for making zeolite was analyzed using SEM, XRD, and FTIR. The characterization results show that bottom ash contains quartz which is round and mullite in an elongated shape. Bottom ash also contains atomic groups such as O-Si-O, Si-OH, and -OH
