Abstract

The straight union leak on the hydraulic steering gear system is what often happens on the coaster ships H-368 KM. Sabuk Nusantara 69. There are many factors that cause the leakage which are due to human errors, specifications of materials that do not conform to standards, and environmental influences such as vibration. then a study of the strength of the straight union material is used. in testing a long straight union microstructure (existing) has a percentage of pearlite 34,182% while for a new material has a pearlite percentage of 51,514%. the higher the pearlite content, the mor hard the material will be. the hardness value in the standard DIN 2353 E (ASTM A105) is 187 HV (Hardness Vickers), while the existing material has a hardness value below the standard value (nut 142.1 HV, Occupancy 191.44 HV, and Ring 105.3 HV). and the alternative material has a hardness value above the standard value (Mur 213.81HV, Occupancy 272.11 HV, Ring 195.89 HV). chemical composition of ASTM A105 carbon 0.35%, manganese 0.6% -0.05%, and nickel 0.40%. chemical composition of existing material, carbon (Nuts 0.1906%, Occupancy 0.2001%, Ring 0.1811%). nickel (nut 0.7244%, occupancy 0.6996%, ring 0.5611%). chemical composition of alternative materials, carbon (Nuts 0.3095%, 0.3352%, 0.2990%). nickel (Nuts 0.3915%, 0.1413%, 0.3084%). the old material is not in accordance with ASTM A105 standard material while the new material has conformity with ASTM A105 standard material.
