Abstract

Workers at the filling workstation for 5-liter antiseptic and disinfectant liquid production at a medical device manufacturing company in East Java were identified as having a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) complaints based on an initial survey of 37 workers in the production area. The high prevalence of complaints indicates the presence of ergonomic hazards that need to be addressed systematically. This study aims to assess ergonomic hazard factors at the filling workstation, propose improvement recommendations based on the occupational health and safety risk control hierarchy, and compare ergonomic risk levels before and after intervention. Work posture assessment was conducted on one worker at the filling workstation using the Ergonomic Hazard Checklist based on Appendix D of SNI 9011:2021, while improvement proposals were designed using Indonesian adult male anthropometric data aged 18–47 years  and modeled in three dimensions using CATIA V5 software. The initial assessment results showed a total score of 14, classified as dangerous, with the main risk factors including awkward posture in the neck, trunk, and wrist areas, kneeling or squatting posture, use of the palm as a striking tool, and manual handling hazards. Proposed improvements include substitution using a rubber mallet, engineering controls comprising workstation redesign incorporating a standing work table, label rack, machine platform, and adjustable trolley, as well as administrative controls and personal protective equipment. Reassessment showed a decrease of 9 points to a total score of 5, classified as requiring further observation, indicating that the proposed interventions were effective in reducing ergonomic risk levels at the filling workstation
