Abstract

Fires are one of the most deadly occupational hazards in the industrial sector, capable of halting business
operations and causing significant loss of life and property. The animal feed industry faces a high risk of fire due
to the use of mechanical equipment and the accumulation of organic materials. A fire incident at one of the
research subject company’s facilities on May 28, 2025, serves as clear evidence of this high risk. As a first line of
defense, portable fire extinguishers (PFEs) are crucial for mitigating fires in their early stages. This study aims to
evaluate existing conditions and redesign the requirements for portable fire extinguishers at a 3,000-ton-per-day
capacity animal feed company to ensure emergency preparedness. Data collection was conducted in two ways:
primary data through field observations, interviews, and expert discussions, and secondary data consisting of the
company’s layout and the placement of existing portable fire extinguishers. The evaluation and redesign phase
referred to the 2022 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 10 by analyzing gaps in type, capacity,
rating, condition, and maximum travel distance based on hazard classification levels (Light, Ordinary, and Extra
Hazard). The research results indicate that the company’s existing conditions include a total of 24 fire extinguisher
units of the Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) type for Class A, B, and C fires. Based on recalculations according to
