Evaluasi dan Perancangan Sistem APAR serta Detektor Kebakaran pada Workshop Fabrikasi
Abstract
A fabrication workshop is a production facility that carries out various hot work activities such as welding, cutting, and grinding simultaneously in an enclosed working environment, resulting in a high fire risk profile. This research was conducted at a construction company's fabrication workshop in Wonoayu, Sidoarjo, which currently only has 8 portable fire extinguisher (PFE) units as the sole active fire protection measure, with no fire detectors or alarm systems in place. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the compliance of existing PFEs and to design a fire detection system along with Manual Call Points (MCP) in accordance with applicable standards. The method used involved field observation and facility layout data, which were then compared against NFPA 10 (2022) for PFEs and NFPA 72 (2022) for fire detectors. The number of required PFEs was calculated using the ratio of floor area to maximum protection area based on extinguisher rating and hazard classification, with final placement verified using AutoCAD based on maximum travel distance. Detector calculations considered detector type, ceiling height, NFPA 72 reduction factors, and the peaked and shed roof configurations present in the facility. Evaluation results show that the blasting & painting area and security post were not protected by any PFE, requiring additions of 3 units and 1 unit of Dry Chemical Powder extinguishers, respectively. The fire detector design results indicate a need for 98 detector units distributed across the workshop, warehouse, office, security post, and hazardous waste storage areas, along with 2 MCP locations. The findings of this study are expected to serve as technical recommendations that can be directly implemented by the company to improve the reliability of its active fire protection system in compliance with applicable standards.
