Abstract

Employee performance is influenced by several internal factors, including competence and work motivation. This study aims to examine the effect of competence on employee performance with work motivation as an intervening variable in a shipyard company in Surabaya. A saturated sampling technique was applied to select 53 respondents. Data were collected through interviews and questionnaires, then analyzed using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method with SmartPLS 4.0 software. The results indicate that competence has a positive effect on employee performance but does not significantly influence work motivation. Moreover, work motivation does not mediate the relationship between competence and employee performance. These findings highlight the need for a comprehensive management strategy to enhance work motivation. The study is limited to a single organization, thereby restricting the generalizability of its results to other similar industries.
