Abstract

A company engaged in the exploration and distribution of crude oil faces corrosion problems
in underground pipelines exposed to acidic soil conditions. To overcome this problem, an effective
corrosion protection installation is needed to extend the life of the pipeline. This study evaluates the
effectiveness of external corrosion protection of pipes using coating and coating + cathodic (SACP)
methods using zinc anodes by conducting immersion tests according to ASTM G31-72 standards using
HCl corrosion media and pH variations of 5; 5.5 and 6 adjusted to field conditions, as well as internal
corrosion protection of pipes using inhibitor methods by installing corrosion coupons based on NACE
RP0775 standards. The test results showed that the smallest corrosion rate occurred at pH 6 a value
of 0.0077 mm/y for coating + cathodic protection (SACP) and 0.0107 mm/y for coating protection.
Meanwhile, the internal side protected by inhibitor obtained a corrosion rate of 0.0152 mm/y.
