Abstract

A piping system failure occurred during operation on the 6-05.VP.EE1800-H1 pipe
connected between the Mash Column and the Condenser due to the piping system design not taking
into account the vacuum pressure in the pipe when the process was running. Redesign of the pipe
needs to be done to overcome the failure of the piping system. This final project discusses the
redesign and stress analysis of several redesign options to determine if the design meets the
allowable stress B31.3. The analysis includes allowable pipe span and stress analysis including
sustained stress, occasional stress and thermal expansion stress using CAESAR II. The stress value
that occurs in 1stdesign for sustain load is 564.8 psi, occasional load is 564.8 psi, expansion load is
28631.4 psi. In 2nd design, the sustain load is 2705.2 psi, the occasional load is 2705.2 psi, and the
expansion load is 9131.9 psi. In 3rd design, the sustain load is 1123 psi, the occasional load is 1164.3
psi, and the expansion load is 26008.5 psi. From the result, each design has met the acceptance
criteria for allowable stress. From the comparison which has been carried out, the smallest stress
values are obtained sequentially in 2nddesign,then 1stdesign and 3rd design..
