Abstract

In this case, it can cause friction to the collision between the sand particles and the inner wall
of the elbow, so that it can cause erosion in the piping system. The impact of erosion is the reduction of
the inner wall of the elbow and leakage occurs. This damage is the biggest cause of the erosion
phenomenon compared to the corrosion phenomenon. The method used in this final project is to manually
calculate the minimum wall thickness of the material referring to ASME B31.3 and calculate the erosion
rate referring to DNV RP 0501, the mass loss rate per unit area each year to determine the lifetime of the
elbow material. , and to visualize the cause of erosion at the elbow using the Computational Fluids
Dynamics method in ANSYS R1 Fluent Software. The results of these calculations will be used as
material for analysis to determine the feasibility of the elbow to continue to operate according to its
lifetime. The resulting erosion rate at the elbow is 3.7215 mm per year. And the magnitude of the erosion
rate affects the lifetime for 1.6 years for the elbow.
