Abstract

In one of the piping lines in the biodiesel system where the pump suction inlet
has a 2” pipe, 90o 2” elbow, 45o 2” elbow and 2”x1” reducer. The fluid that flows is Oil
Glycerin which has a particle size of 2.30.E-05 m which can cause erosion. These particles
experience friction within the pipe wall and cause a decrease in the thickness of the pipe, this
results in a decrease in the strength of the pipe. The method used in this final project is
manual calculation of the erosion rate value which will be followed by the calculation of the
minimum thickness, the lost mass flow rate per unit area and continued with the calculation of
the life time value. For modeling, the ANSYS software uses the CFD or Compulation Fluid
Dynamic method. The results of the Max DPM erosion rate are 6.51 E-05 kg/m2.s in design A
and 1.81 E-04 kg/m2.s in design B. Life time values obtained is 2.8 years for design A and 8.7
years for design B.
