Abstract

Corrosion is material damage due to chemical reaction. It’s usually called as Internal
corrosion. This condition happened to API 5L Grade B pipe material in one of East Java companies.
It was existed because it carries acidic H2SO4 fluid. To minimize it, additional inhibitors were
needed. Immersion test method and weight loss calculation would support it.The test and calculation
are used to determine its corrosion rate and lifetime. Inhibitors used were pine resin and NaNO2.
There were 4 variations of H2SO4 used in it such as 800, 1000, 1200, 1400 ppm. The inhibitor
variations were 0, 150, 250, 350 and 450 ppm. Initial and final test were carried out by weighing the
specimen. The test hour was 336 using room temperature and static fluid based on ASTM G-31.The
result showed that the lowest corrosion rate was found in NaNO2 inhibitors of 0.057 mm/year with
highest lifetime value of 99.15 years. Pine resin inhibitors had a corrosion rate of 0.112 mm/year
with a lifetime value of 52.39 years. Based on the results, the most effective and efficient inhibitor to
use on the materials was NaNO2 inhibitor of 0.784% because it has the lowest corrosion rate and
longer life time.
