Abstract

Electrical Discharge Machining or EDM is a non-conventional machining process that has a work system that utilizes heat energy from the process of electric sparks (spark) due to the difference in charge between the electrode and the workpiece filled with dielectric fluid. In general, EDM sinking is used to produce molds and dies. In the process of making a mold using sinking EDM, it is necessary to pay attention to the rate of electrode wear to get minimal costs and to produce a quality product in terms of dimensional accuracy and roughness of the workpiece. The Taguchi method is an experimental design used to improve product quality. The matrix orthogonal array L18 is chosen to determine the optimum level of the parameter. The parameters used in this study were the type of electrode, gap voltage, on time, and off time for AISI P20 which is used in mold making. Based on the analysis results, the optimum results of the electrode wear rate using graphite and setting parameters of the gap voltage of 30 volts, on time 250 μs and off time 40 μs.
