Abstract

Suicide among university students is an increasingly concerning mental health issue, particularly amidst the growing academic pressures within higher education environments. Students are in a transitional stage toward adulthood, marked by various emotional, social, and academic challenges. These conditions make them more vulnerable to psychological problems, including burnout and suicidal ideation. This study aims to examine the influence of academic burnout on the emergence of suicidal ideation among students. A quantitative approach using a survey method was applied. A total of 180 students from various study programs were randomly selected to complete online questionnaires, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) and the Adult Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (ASIQ). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and logistic regression through SPSS version 27. The results showed that academic burnout significantly affects suicidal ideation (p < 0.012), with its three main dimensions—emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced academic efficacy—contributing to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts among students. These findings reinforce previous research and highlight the urgent need for early intervention through counseling services and programs aimed at strengthening students’ academic resilience to prevent more serious psychological risks.
