Abstract

The chemical laboratory presents various potential hazards that can lead to workplace accidents, such as exposure to hazardous chemicals, fires, and explosions. This study aims to identify potential hazards and assess the level of risk in the process of heavy metal analysis in a chemical laboratory using the HIRARC and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) methods. The HIRARC method is used to identify hazards, assess risks, and determine appropriate control measures, while FTA is applied to identify the root causes of the highest potential hazards. The results of the study indicate that the highest risk arises from the use of AAS machines and microwaves, which can lead to fires or explosions. Through the FTA method, it was found that the root causes of the highest risks include worker negligence, lack of training, irregular equipment inspections, inadequate standard operating procedures (SOP), and ineffective fire suppression systems. The recommended control measures include regular occupational health and safety (OHS) training, routine inspections, SOP improvements, and enhancing the effectiveness of laboratory safety systems. It is expected that the implementation of these risk controls can significantly reduce workplace accidents in the laboratory.
