Abstract

Shipbuilding Institute of Polytechnic Surabaya (PPNS), as an institution striving to achieve global recognition,
participates in UI GreenMetric to promote sustainable education quality, including the importance of
Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). OSH is an effort to prevent accidents and control potential hazards,
especially those that could trigger emergencies such as fires. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency
of West Jakarta, there were 1,171 fire incidents between 2021 and 2023. Fires often occur in residential buildings,
particularly high-rise buildings. High-rise buildings should have safety systems, including fire protection
equipment such as Fire Extinguishers (APAR), to ensure the safety of occupants inside. This study aims to evaluate
the active fire protection system, specifically the APAR, in the PPNS Integrated Lecture Building, which has 8
floors, with the installation of APAR still following the contractor's specifications. Therefore, an evaluation of the
required number of APARs was conducted based on the regulations of Permenakertrans No. 4 of 1980 and the
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 10 of 2022 to identify discrepancies and ensure the procurement of
appropriate APARs for the safety of occupants and building assets on campus. Based on the evaluation results,
the initial number of existing fire extinguishers, which was 16 units, was increased to 24 units according to
Permenakertrans No. 4 of 1980. Meanwhile, according to NFPA 10 of 2022, an additional 9 fire extinguishers are
required, with 8 units being Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) type and 1 unit being CO2 type.
