Abstract

Fires in industrial warehouses have the potential to result in significant losses due to their impact on various stakeholders. Warehouses generally face a high fire risk, as the storage designs in industrial warehouses typically feature high-stacked materials, making fire control challenging. An automatic sprinkler system can provide effective fire protection for warehouse storage. This research examines a case study of a storage rack in the packaging warehouse of a palm oil-based food manufacturing company in Surabaya. The automatic sprinkler system to be installed in the warehouse must be integrated with the rack arrangement, as the nature and characteristics of storage in the packaging warehouse cannot be adequately addressed solely by roof sprinklers. The installation of rack sprinklers requires adherence to specific clauses to ensure the effectiveness of the fire extinguishing system. This study presents the design approach for the placement of sprinkler racks on the storage shelves in the packaging warehouse, in accordance with NFPA 13 standards. The design results indicate the need to modify the initial packaging warehouse design to align with the provisions outlined in NFPA 13. The adjusted warehouse design allows for the effective placement of in-rack sprinkler, which is arranged in two vertically interconnected levels and positioned at the intersection of the transverse and longitudinal flues. The ceiling sprinkler is positioned upright with a horizontal deflector, which the branch line parallel to the roof slope.
