Abstract

In the previous studies, several experiments on Savonius wind turbines have been conducted. One such study examined the effect of deflector angle variation next to the advancing blade of a Savonius wind turbine with Myring n = 1. These studies showed that adding a deflector next to the advancing blade can improve the turbine performance, although the improvement was not yet optimum. Therefore, this experiment was carried out by modifying the arc length with an addition of +4 cm and a reduction of –4 cm from the standard size. The deflector angle variations used were 0°, 15°, 30°, and 45°, at wind speeds of 5, 6, and 7 m/s. This test was also conducted to determine the effect of deflector placement to Coefficient of Power (Cp) and Coefficient of Torque (Ct). The results showed that the optimum configuration was achieved with a -4 cm arc length reduction and a deflector angle of 45° at a wind speed of 6 m/s. The highest Ct value was 0.6892 at a TSR of 0.0838, resulting in a 1.250% improvement in turbine performance. The highest Cp value was 0.2450 at a TSR of 0.6914, corresponding to a 108.241% increase in turbine performance.
