Abstract

With the increasing demand for transportation modes, especially the use of diesel engines,
air pollution is on the rise. Technology is needed to solve this problem. Exhaust Gas Recirculation
(EGR) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) are technologies used to reduce emissions and improve
engine performance. This study will combine EGR and DPF.EGR valve type is gate valve and DPF
filter material made of glasswool with a density of 20 mm. EGR and DPF technology will be applied to
a four-stroke diesel engine to analyze engine performance, CO emissions, and PM produced. The
study's variations include EGR valve opening percentages of 20%, 35%, and 50%, with engine speeds
of 1000 rpm, 1200 rpm, 1300 rpm, and 1400 rpm, and load variations of 2000 watts, 3000 watts, and
4000 watts. Emission test results show that CO and PM increase with incresing EGR valve opening.
Performance test results show that use of 20% EGR and DPF can improve power, torque, and GSFC,
but use of 35% and 50% EGR with DPF will worsen power, torque, and GSFC. Therefore, use of 20%
EGR and DPF is more recommended because it produces better emissions and performance than
variation of 35% and 50% EGR with DPF.
