Abstract

The Savonius turbine is a simple vertical-axis wind turbine with low operating speed but it can capture wind from any direction. In the previous studies, variations in the addition of deflectors can improve the turbine performance, but its increase was not optimum yet. In this time, the addition of deflector length variations on the advancing side of the turbine blade with Myring n=1 was carried out. The deflector length variations were 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, and 40 cm. The wind speed was 5 m/s, 6 m/s, and 7 m/s. Both the diamater and height of the turbine are the same i.e. 40 cm and the deflector angle was ?=15o. The result is the best performance improvement of the turbine occured at a deflector length of 20 cm and wind speed of 6 m/s. The increase percentage of it was 72.85% for coefficient of power  and 28.30% for coefficient of torque to the turbine with myring n = 1 without any deflector.
