Abstract

Indonesia has a high wind potential of 6-8 m/s and potentially to be utilized as a power plant. Savonius wind turbines can be utilized for this function. Previous studies had shown that additional deflector in front of  returning blade can improve turbine performance, but it is was not optimum yet. Thus, this experiment was conducted by placing a deflector plate in front of  returning blade with Myring n=1. The variation of deflector location to the Y axis is 0 cm, 5 cm, 10 cm, 15 cm, and 20 cm. The wind speed variation is 5 m/s, 6 m/s, and 7 m/s. The diameter and height of the turbine is 40 cm, the length of  deflector is 50 cm, and the angle is ?=450. This experiment was conducted to determine how the deflector location affects the Coefficient of Power and Coefficient of Torque. The result shows that the best performance improvement of the turbine occurs at a deflector location of 20 cm with a wind speed of 6 m/s. The best value of Coefficient of Power is 0.2295 and the Coefficient of Torque is 0.8515. The percentage of Coefficient of Power increase 43.456% and Coefficient of Torque is 52.255% against the Savonius wind turbine with Myring n=1 without any deflector.
