Abstract

With the development of the times more engines are being used, including diesel engines. The longer the diesel engine is used, the more the engine component became worn out, especially on the piston due to heat and pressure of the engine work. The worn out of the piston due to heat and work pressure can be minimized by using ceramic coatings called thermal barrier coatings. This research will discuss the effect of using thermal barrier coating on the multi swirl combustion system (MSCS) piston chamber and flat piston chamber. The method used in this study is a simulation using Solidworks software to determine the temperature distribution and the distribution of stress that occurs in both types of pistons and to get the best piston configuration. Based on the simulation results it was found that the coating layer Zirconium Dioxide (ZrO2) with a thickness of 0.8 mm coating produces the lowest temperature and stress on the piston.
