Abstract

Storage tanks have an important role in storing various liquids, gases and materials on an industrial and individual scale. Its use involves various sectors, such as the oil and gas industry, chemical industry and pharmaceuticals. The structural performance of tanks, especially steel cylindrical tanks, indicates their susceptibility to damage during earthquakes. This research focuses on analyzing the design strength of an ammonia storage tank with a capacity of 40,000 metric tons to withstand the earthquake that occurred in the city of Bontang using seismic parameters there, so that it can determine stress that occurs on the shell. Manual seismic design calculations refer to the API 650 standard, where the calculation results show that additional anchors are needed so that the tank can be stable. In the finite element method simulation, the fix support is placed on the anchor seat to determine the stress that occurs, and after simulation a stress that occurs on shell tank is 236,96 MPa.
