Abstract

This research analyzes the effects of different transfer modes—globular, short-circuit, and spray—on the chemical composition, radiographic results, and mechanical properties in the GMAW welding process using 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm ER70S-6 electrodes in the 1G position. Radiographic tests indicate slag inclusion in short-circuit mode with a 0.8 mm electrode and porosity clusters in spray mode with a 0.8 mm electrode. Chemical composition tests reveal the highest carbon value of 0.0754% in globular mode with a 1.2 mm electrode, the highest manganese value of 1.2% in spray mode with a 1.2 mm electrode, and the highest carbon equivalent of 0.4375% also in spray mode with a 1.2 mm electrode. The tensile test shows the highest ultimate strength of 548.08 MPa in spray mode with a 1.2 mm electrode, while the impact test records the highest value of 116.33 J in short-circuit mode with a 0.8 mm electrode. The hardness test indicates the highest value of 168.5 HV in spray mode with a 1.2 mm electrode. This study aims to provide insights into the effects of transfer modes and electrode diameters in GMAW welding.
