Critical Line, Allowable Pipe Span, Natural Frequency, Nozzle LoadAbstract
The final project on the piping system from the discharge line of the heat exchanger to the amine regenerator is classified as a critical line. A static analysis was conducted to evaluate stresses resulting from sustained loads, thermal expansion, and occasional loads, in accordance with the ASME B31.3 standard. A comprehensive analysis of allowable pipe spans, stress levels, support placement, nozzle loads, and natural frequencies was required to ensure system safety. The results indicated that thermal expansion stress under existing conditions exceeded the allowable limit, with a maximum value of 64,630.9 psi (158%). The allowable pipe span was determined using parameters based on stress and deflection criteria, yielding a minimum span of 30 feet. Following a support redesign by adding guide type supports and adjusting their placement the maximum thermal expansion stress was successfully reduced to 35,844.7 psi (88.84%), complying with standard limit. Dynamic analysis using the modal method showed an increase in the system’s natural frequency from 3.112 Hz to 4.529 Hz after support optimization, which remains above minimum threshold of 2 Hz. Evaluation of amine regenerator nozzle loads under both operating and design conditions also confirmed that the load values were within the company’s safety standards.
