Abstract

In the industrial world, especially pipe fabrication, there must be a connection process between pipe
components. One way to connect these components is by welding. With today's developments, many applications are
used to model or simulate the welding that carried out, for example modeling welded joints using Solidworks and also
Ansys. In the welding process, the type of weld is something that must be considered and the welding distance is also
an important thing that must be considered too. In this case the minimum welding distance between two adjacent
welding edges has different standards. Welding in close proximity can affect the material, so it is important to determine
the optimal distance that reduces these negative effects. The simulation was carried out by modeling various distances
between welds and observing the residual stress distribution and total deformation. Therefore, this research aims to
determine the effect of the minimum distance between welding joints on the distribution of welding stress using
software. The research object used (test specimen) is a pipe with material A106 Gr B, dimensions outside diameter 610
mm and Thickness 17 mm. The simulation was carried out at 4 variations of distance between welds, namely 2t, 3t, 4t
and 5t where t is the Thickness of the test material. From the analysis results, it was found that the maximum residual
stress occurred at a welding distance of 2xThickness of 199.98 MPa, this value still meets the yield stress value of the
material used, with a maximum deformation of 7.2 mm.
