Abstract

Abstract - In the process of building the PFAD 2 Modified plant, there are 3 reactor tanks that will react 3
fluids. The fluids are fatty alcohol, glyceryn, and stearic acid. In the MSDS of the three fluids, it is explained
that the fluids are combustible/flammable. To increase safety from fire hazards in the reactor tank containing
Fatty Alcohol, Glycerin and Stearic Acid where in the MSDS the three fluids are written as extinguishing
media, namely Water, CO2, Dry chemical and Alcohol Resistant Foam. So it is necessary to design a fire
protection system that uses foam media that refers to the NFPA 11 standard and is supported by water media
for the water spray system referring to the NFPA 15 standard which is useful for cooling and preventing fire
damage to other tanks and is expected not to catch fire. In the design of the extinguishing system using a main
pipe with a diameter of 6 inches and a branch pipe with a diameter of 4 inches, while in the protection system
using a main pipe with a diameter of 8 inches and a branch pipe diameter of 6 inches. After manual
calculation, the pump head for the extinguishing system is 15.313 m and the pump power is 6.993 kW. The
results of manual calculation of the protection system amounted to 20.824 m and 32.833 kW. While the
calculation using software obtained the head and pump power of the extinguishing system of 15.739 m and
8.66 kW, while the protection system amounted to 21.813 m and 31.80 kW. The pump used in the
extinguishing system is Ebara 50 x 40 FSHA, while the protection system uses Ebara 100 x 80 FSJA. The
estimated cost of materials and equipment needed is IDR 511,094,594.
