Abstract

Wrapping protection is a coating method for underground piping as a barrier between underground piping and underground environment so that it doesn’t quickly corrode. One of the things that is avoided in wrapping protection is coating failure which is characterized by a defect, such as pin holes, air bubbles, voids, and wrinkles. These factors determine the ability of the wrapping tape to adhere the surface of material. Based on that problem, this study was conducted to determine the effect of surface preparation with hand tool cleaning (SSPC SP-2), power tool cleaning (SSPC SP-3), and commercial blast cleaning (SSPC SP-6), liquid adhesive thickness with variations in thickness of WFT 100 µm, 175 µm, 250 µm. And variations of wrapping tape with a standard wrap tape coating system and double wrap tape coating system on the adhesion of wrapping protection to API 5L Grade B pipes. Testing using peel test method refers to ASTM D 903-98 standard. Based on peel test, the higher surface roughness value of the material, can increase the value of the adhesion to the material. The highest adhesion value in surface preparation variables was obtained in commercial blast cleaning with an average adhesion value 0.096643 kg/mm. Based on peel test, the highest adhesion value was obtained in the commercial blast cleaning variations, 250 µm wet film thickness and standard wrap tape variations with an average adhesion value 0.14500 kg/mm.
