Abstract

Abstract - The scale is a deposit of inorganic compounds that settles and forms crystal deposits on the surface of a substrate. The scale in the pipe will inhibit the flow inside the pipe, so the pipe will likely break because of overheating. This study uses SEM (scanning electron microscopy) testing to determine the morphological shape and content of chemical compounds in the scale. To remove the scale, tested 18 pipes using a solution of citric acid and sulfamic acid with variations in concentration, debit, temperature and time. After the testing is done, the biggest weight loss results were obtained 1.6 grams and the smallest 0.5 grams. The diameter of the pipe increases with the largest value which is 0.36 mm and the smallest is 0.16 mm. The visual form between before and after is different because the higher concentration, debit, time, and temperature, the faster scale dissolves. Based on economical calculations if before cleaning there is a scale on the Carbon Steel A106 Grade B material pipe equipment production value every year which is Rp.649.496.323.  After cleaning the Carbon Steel material pipe equipment, the annual production value is Rp.653.974.748, then the estimated value of production in one year increased by Rp.4.478.425.
